The course is open to all seafarers and prospective seafarers and should be completed prior to employment on a sea-going vessel.The emphasis of this course is to produce sea-going personnel who are properly trained in terms of the International Standards and Certification for Watchkeepers (STCW).   The training programme, ADVANCED MARINE FIRE FIGHTING, is accredited by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and its emphasis is to ensure Safety of Lives at Sea. (SOLAS).

The course aims to provide the training for candidates in firefighting and fire prevention in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code, according to the syllabus set out in Table A-VI/6 and the SAMSA code.
