DCP Extinguishers – Not All the Same

When it comes to fire safety, one size does not fit all, especially with Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) extinguishers. Understanding the nuances between different types of DCP extinguishers can mean the difference between effective fire control and potential hazards. A critical factor for any DCP extinguisher owner is to pay close attention to the manufacturing specifications, which are detailed on the instruction label of the extinguisher.

Disposable vs. Refillable DCP Extinguishers

Disposable DCP Extinguishers (SANS 1322)

Smaller DCP extinguishers, often labeled as “disposable,” adhere to the SANS 1322 standard for Portable Non-Refillable Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers are designed for single use. After deployment, they must be discarded. Key characteristics include:

  • Service Pressure: Typically operates at a maximum of 1000 KPA.
  • No Pressure Relief Valve: These extinguishers do not require a pressure relief valve, a crucial safety component in reusable models.

The absence of a pressure relief valve in disposable extinguishers is significant. It simplifies the design for single use but means these extinguishers are not suitable for multiple uses or high-pressure scenarios.

Refillable DCP Extinguishers (SANS 1910)

On the other hand, larger DCP extinguishers conform to the SANS 1910 standard for Portable Refillable Fire Extinguishers. These are designed for long-term use and can be recharged and maintained over time. Key characteristics include:

  • Service Pressure: These extinguishers typically operate at 1400 KPA.
  • Pressure Relief Valve: Essential for safety, these extinguishers must be equipped with a safety relief valve.
  • Maintenance: Requires annual servicing by a registered technician and regular pressure tests at specified intervals.

The pressure relief valve in refillable extinguishers is a critical safety feature, preventing dangerous pressure build-ups that could lead to accidents.

Importance of Adhering to Specifications

The manufacturing codes—SANS 1322 for disposable and SANS 1910 for refillable—may appear to be mere numbers, but they signify vital differences in design and use. Misusing these extinguishers, such as placing a SANS 1322 extinguisher under a nitrogen charge beyond its designed threshold, can be hazardous and potentially fatal.

Key Takeaways for Owners

  • Check the Label: Always read the instruction label on your extinguisher to understand its specifications and intended use.
  • Know Your Extinguisher Type: Determine whether your extinguisher is disposable or refillable and follow the appropriate guidelines for use and maintenance.
  • Annual Servicing: Ensure that refillable extinguishers are serviced annually by certified technicians.
  • Safety First: Never attempt to reuse a disposable extinguisher or operate it beyond its designated pressure limits.

Understanding these differences ensures not only compliance with safety standards but also the effective and safe handling of fire emergencies. Always prioritize safety by adhering to the specific guidelines for your DCP extinguishers.
