Summary:
This two-day course is designed to develop competent fire marshals who can identify fire hazards, operate fire fighting equipment, and carry out basic fire fighting procedures safely and effectively. It covers both the theory and practical application needed to fulfil a fire marshal role in a workplace setting, in line with OHS Act requirements.

What you'll cover:
Spread across five specific outcomes, the course covers identifying different types and classes of fire, understanding and practising fire prevention principles, the correct operation of basic fire fighting equipment including extinguishers, hose reels and hydrants, and performing basic fire fighting procedures. The course also addresses the triangle of combustion, the formulation of fire extinguishers across different mediums — water, foam and CO2 — and how to communicate effectively during a fire emergency. Critical cross-field outcomes are built into the course, covering problem identification, responsible self-management, information gathering and correct use of extinguishing agents for different fire classes.

Also suited to those seeking to progress beyond Fire Marshal level or who require breathing apparatus competency as part of their role.
What you'll cover:
The course is structured across six modules. Module 1 covers fire prevention and protection, emergency procedures, evacuation roles, team structures and how to alert emergency services. Module 2 addresses the spread of fire and heat radiation, fire behaviour, ignition sources, fire classification and extinguishing mediums including water, dry powder, foam and CO2. Module 3 covers the selection and operation of fire fighting equipment — portable extinguishers, hose reels and fire hydrants. Module 4 deals with monitoring a fire, understanding fire development stages from ignition through to flashover and decay, and how to attack and contain a fire safely. Module 5 covers scene security and handover procedures. Module 6 addresses legal reporting requirements including COIDA and the OHS Act, inspection forms and evidence categorisation.

The course works through a single chapter covering the burning process and the chemistry behind how fires develop and spread, recognition of dangerous conditions such as backdraught, the different methods used to extinguish fires, the classification of fires into their various classes, and how to match the correct extinguisher type to each class of fire.
